Abstract. In 1997 September we observed HER X-1 in a two day long continuous monitoring with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). In this paper we report on the results of a timing analysis of 32 highly time resolved light curves covering the whole time of the turn-on in an energy range from 2 to 40 keV. A detailed timing analysis reveals, that the pulse profile undergoes no systematic change over the time of the turn-on, contrary to earlier observations of HER X-1 in the main-on, short-on or turn-off phases of the 35 day cycle. On the other hand the pulse profile shows a systematic change in its shape dependent on the energy especially in the range from 0 to 18.9 kev.
