Abstract. We present high-resolution spectra of PG 1159 stars obtained at the Keck and NTT telescopes. They are compared to NLTE model fluxes in order to investigate the possibility to determine rotational velocities. The high-quality data reveal deficiencies in the model atmospheres and in our knowledge of atomic energy levels. These presently hamper the data analysis. The fast rotation of NGC 246 is confirmed. There are hints that rotational velocities in three luminous hybrid-PG 1159 stars are of the order vrot·sin i = 40 km s-1. The slow rotation of PG ,1159-035, previously derived by asteroseismology, is corroborated.
