Abstract. We present first results of the analysis of XMM-Newton observations of the black hole candidates GX 339-4 and LMC X-1. The flux level and spectral shape of GX 339-4 during its recent "off state" were comparable with earlier BeppoSAX observations. LMC X-1 was observed during its usual soft state.
