Abstract. High resolution UV spectroscopy with IUE has enabled the first detection and quantitative analysis of iron group elements in hot compact stars. The results suggest that radiative acceleration and gravitational settling are responsible for the observed heavy element abundances.

Key words: stellar atmospheres; hot subdwarfs; white dwarfs
