Abstract. The Marano Field is a ~1° × 1° region in the southern sky which has been extensively studied in different wavelength bands (Marano et al. 1988; Gruppioni et al. 1997; Lowenthal & Koo, 1997; Zamorani et al. 1999). We observed the Marano Field with XMM-Newton in the framework of the guaranteed time program. The observation consists of 16 overlapping snapshot pointings. This observation strategy was chosen to ensure a homogeneous exposure over the center of the field. Both EPIC cameras were mainly operated in the fullframe mode, using the thin filter in all but one pointing. The total exposure time ranges from ~100 ksec (EPIC-MOS) or ~50 ksec (EPIC-PN), respectively, in the center of the field to some ksec in the outer regions.
