The GAIA project

The Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics (GAIA) is a concept proposed to ESA as a cornerstone mission in the Horizon 2000+ program. The chances are very good that this project will really become a cornerstone mission and there are some activities going in the direction of transferring the knowledge gathered in the HIPPARCOS / TYCHO project to the GAIA project.
