This photo shows the Echelle on board electronics box with the cover opened.
The housing was built by DASA and is identical to those electronics boxes
used by DASA for the ASTRO-SPAS electronics.
The whole electronics in this box (except for the DC/DC converters)
was developed at our institute.
The Echelle electronics box contains the following components:
a DC/DC converter for power supply
a Motorola M68000 processor system
the data aquisition unit for the Echelle detector
The on board processor performs the following tasks:
reading the photon coordinates delivered from the data aquisition unit
integration of images from single photon coordinates
storing the data on the ASTRO-SPAS magnetic tape
aquisition of housekeeping data like temperatures, voltages, etc.
sending parts of the data to the ground station
receiving and processing commands from the ground station
The data aquisition unit consists of the following units:
2 boards with 2 analog-to-digital converters each to sample the maximum voltage of the pulses
for each registered photon
2 boards with one digital divider each to calculate the X- and Y-coordinates
for each registered photon
one board to calculate an address within the image memory of the
on board processor
one FIFO board to buffer the photon image memory addresses
